What is a click through rate or CTR?
A click through rate or CTR is the ratio showing how many people who viewed your advert, ended up clicking on it or engaging with it.

The clickthrough rate (CTR) is typically used by advertisers to gauge how well their keywords, their creative, or their targeting options for their ads are performing.

This is a useful metric as it can help analysts pick out weaknesses in campaigns. These weaknesses may be dragging down campaign performance. This is why campaigns should be monitored and attended to on a regular basis, and not setup in a "run and done" manner.

An analyst would also be able to tell whether the changes they've implemented to a campaign are working. Since the clickthrough rate would typically rise or decrease after a change.

A rise in CTR reflects a positive change, while a decrease in CTR reflects a negative change. If a negative change is reflected, the recommended action would be to implement another more subtle change until the CTR starts increasing.

A higher CTR typically means that your advertisements are more relevant to the user. Advertisements which have been contextualized to a particular audience will typically show a high CTR. This is because people tend to engage with things they find relevant to themselves or with the things that speak to their queries.

The more an advertisement relates to a user, the more likely the user will engage with the advertisement. This is particularly true for advertisements which run on the Google AdWords Search platform. Users on this platform are looking for very specific details and information. Matching a users query in this instance with something relevant to the users query will typically ensure a higher CTR.

If you're experiencing a dip in CTR, it may be a good idea to check through your advertisements to see whether they have enough relevance to the targeted audience. Change either the targeting or the creative if the ads are experiencing a low CTR.
